The Differences Between Cosmetology and Other Beauty Licenses in Florida

Unlike many other states, there are many differences in the types of beauty occupation certificates in Florida. The cosmetology based licenses in the state have been broken down into several minor licenses such as hair braider, facial specialist, and body wrapper. While these breakdowns enable many different types of positions within the cosmetology industry, it can be a murky field to navigate.
In fact, many of these licenses have been wrapped into larger licenses, that can make it even more confusing. For example, the nail and facial specialists feed into the Full Specialist’s Certificate, which then feeds into the cosmetology license, making that the all-encompassing certificate. The breakdown of each license is below to help you understand the benefits of each and make a choice that will be most beneficial to your future.
If you have further questions as to the benefits of a full Cosmetology license in comparison to the other Florida licenses, please reach out to our admissions office, we would be glad to assist you.

  • Found yourself looking for an education that allows you to work in and outside of a classroom?
  • Wondered what it would be like have a job doing something that you LOVE?

You should consider a career in cosmetology! A beauty career could mean flexible schedules, setting trends, and learning in a student salon. So where exactly could you be working as a cosmetologist? Here are 4 awesome workplaces cosmetologists could potentially work in.

high-end salon

1. High-End Salon

Modern, sleek, innovative, shiny, and a place to call home! High-end salons are common places for cosmetologists to work. You could be performing services like haircuts and colors as well as facials and nail services. Typically, fancier salons can ask more for their services than usual, and if you rent your booth, you can set your own schedule.

2. Editorial

As a cosmetologist, you can potentially work in print or digital advertising. Wherever models are used, a cosmetologist is probably there, too. Hairstylists and makeup artists work alongside fashion designers to create the perfect look for magazines, commercials, or a variety of other media. Cosmetologists may have the chance to see their work on the pages of a magazine!

3. Personal Stylist

You can go freelance as a cosmetologist! That means you’re your own boss, and you can pick your clients. You can also have a greater control over your schedule. Some people become personal stylists for big days like weddings, and others opt to pursue a Hollywood dream as a stylist to the stars. This job takes a lot of drive and talent, so get to work!

4. Salon Owner

Cosmetologists who also want to be entrepreneurs can run their own salon. Owners control employees, products, PR, and other business aspects. They can also work behind the chair if they choose. This is a great path for those who are equally as intrigued with business as they are beauty. It’s a career option that can provide the best of both worlds!

TSPA Instructors Pamper Those Recognized at the Golden Apple Banquet

The Salon Professional Academy(TSPA), Ft Myers’ students and teachers had the privilege of showing off their skill at the Lee County Golden Apple Recognition Banquet in 2015.

Their amazing skills were shown on stage as we had the opportunity to work with each of the award nominees and recipients prior to the event.

A Program for Those Often Forgotten

Thirty years ago the Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Program was founded and developed by The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools, Inc. It began as a way to recognize outstanding teachers in their district. The foundation has awarded over 150 teachers with its coveted Golden Apple.

Since the nominees are open to the public, it allows parents, teachers, and administrators to nominate teachers in the Lee County Schools who have gone above and beyond to impact their schools and their students. Each year they see more than 2,000 nominations. Among those, they are then narrowed down to 30 finalists.

A Night to Remember

From those thirty finalists, only six recipients are chosen. Announced at an elegant black-tie gala, these extraordinary instructors are honored in a way not often seen.

It is at this event that the students at The Salon Professional Academy, Ft Myers were truly able to shine, creating glamorous looks for many of the recipients to prepare them for the big event.

We are proud of our students for being willing and eager to provide amazing services to these nominees. We wish each of them luck as they attend an event that recognizes so many.

NYC, Amazing Hair, Beautiful Ninjas

2014 NSC WinnersNew York City played host to a once-in-a-lifetime event for the winners of the 2014 TSPA National Student Competition. In addition to a trip to NYC, the students and their sponsoring educators were treated to one-on-one training with REDKEN Artistic Director Chris Baran.

The training extended well beyond the classroom – all the way to the set of a professional photo shoot. The students worked hands-on behind the scenes with the models, photographer, and camera crew. The theme of the fantasy shoot was “ninja glamour” complete with elaborate wardrobe, fabulous makeup, and lots of amazing hair. This experience exposed students to just how limitless a career in the cosmetology field can be; with multiple avenues to pursue with the training they are receiving at TSPA. Continue reading
