Decoding Hair Color: Permanent vs. Demi-Permanent

Hair color is a powerful tool for self-expression and transformation. Whether you want to cover your gray hair, try a new shade, or experiment with a fresh look, understanding the difference between permanent and demi-permanent hair color is essential. In this blog, we’ll explore these two hair color options and how The Salon Professional Academy of Ft. Myers educates and empowers our students to master these products.

Permanent Hair Color: Vibrant and Long-Lasting

Permanent hair color is exactly as the name suggests: permanent. It penetrates the hair shaft and chemically alters the natural pigment allowing the colorist to shift the hair color darker or lighter. This type of hair color is used for those who want a long-lasting change or full gray coverage. At The Salon Professional Academy Ft Myers, we utilize Redken’s Color Fusion as our permanent hair color line.

Key Features of Permanent Hair Color:

Longer Lasting Results

Permanent hair color lasts until new hair grows in. As the hair grows, you’ll notice a “line of demarcation,” which typically prompts a touch-up. However nothing is quite permanent, as the tone or depth might fade over time even with permanent hair color.

Gray Coverage

Permanent hair color effectively covers gray or white hair, making it a popular choice for guests with unwanted gray. These guests typically return within 4 – 6 weeks for loyal touch ups.

Lighten Natural Hair Color

Permanent hair color has the ability to shift the natural hair color and lighten the end result. If the desired vision is lighter than the guests natural hair color, permanent hair color becomes one of the options. The reason permanent hair color can lighten hair is due to whats discussed next.

Alkaline Base

Permanent color often contains ammonia or MEA, which helps swell the hair cuticle to allow deeper color penetration. This is what gives permanent hair color the ability to not only darken hair, but lighten it as well. However, this can be harsher on hair and require diligent maintenance with professional hair care and treatments.

Demi-Permanent Hair Color: Subtle and Low Commitment

Simply put, Demi-permanent hair color is a less permanent option for hair color. It doesn’t penetrate the hair shaft as deeply as permanent color, making it a great choice for those who want to experiment with hair color without a long-term commitment. At The Salon Professional Academy Ft Myers, we use Redken’s signature Shades EQ as our demi-permanent line.

Key Features of Demi-Permanent Hair Color:

Fade on tone

Demi-permanent color gradually fades on tone with each shampoo, typically lasting for around 4 to 6 weeks. This means it’s less commitment with less risk.

Gentler Formulation

Demi-permanent color is ammonia-free or contains very low levels, making it gentler on the hair. Some demi-permanent hair color can improve the health of the hair significantly due to the conditioning benefits.

Tone Enhancement

It’s excellent for adding shine, enhancing natural tones, or experimenting with subtle color changes. After a highlight or a lightening service, demi-permanent is used to tone the brassiness, or warmth present during the lightening process.

No Visible Root Line

Since it fades naturally, there’s no harsh root line as your hair grows out. Darker shades may have more of a permanent result, thus creating a slight demarcation line.

The Salon Professional Academy of Ft. Myers Hair Color Education

Our students undergo rigorous training in color theory, application methods, and client consultation to ensure safe and successful transformations for their clients. They learn to choose the right shade, mix colors, and apply the color evenly for optimal results. The Salon Professional Academy of Ft. Myers equips its students with a thorough understanding of both permanent and demi-permanent hair color. They learn the art of color selection, proper application, and maintenance to ensure that clients can enjoy their desired look.

The choice between permanent and demi-permanent hair color ultimately depends on your desired look, commitment level, and hair health. Thanks to our amazing, caring Educators at The Salon Professional Academy of Ft. Myers, aspiring hairstylists are well-versed in both options, ensuring that clients can confidently and safely achieve their hair color goals.
