You may notice that every salon and spa has retail space just as we do in our Cosmetology and Esthetics School, or at least an opportunity to purchase the products used on our guests. As a stylist or esthetician, do I really need to sell retail?? Or as a guest, do I really need to buy all these haircare and skincare products? The answer to both questions is, absolutely yes. I will share with you my thoughts as to the why from both perspectives, and that will show why this is part of our curriculum at our beauty school in Ft Myers.
Most people in the industry tell me that they don’t like selling retail because it feels like a “sales person”. True, we are first and foremost service providers, however, we need products to perform our services, so our guests need the same products to get the same result. One of the reasons clients leave their stylists or esthetician is because they didn’t listen and offer the right products. Selling unnecessary products in a pushy way is absolutely a turn off, and will quickly lose their trust. If they need it to create the look you created, please share that with them.
Our guests don’t always know how to use their products effectively. If used improperly, the amazing products may not perform satisfactorily. We teach our Cosmetology and Esthetics Students to show the guest how much of the product they are using, and how to apply the product. In the salon, I will sometimes have them put the product on their hair so they have some tutoring. There are so many products to choose from, help them understand why there are so many products, and which ones are right for them.
During Cosmetology and Esthetics Training, our students are learning how to effectively use products to create many different results on you! It is so much fun, and the result of all the experimenting is the recommendations made. That is why sometimes you will hear retail referred to as “prescription” or “customized. In the Ft Myers area, we have lots of humidity with lots of hot days with pools & beach. That means the products recommended by our cosmetology students might help to protect your hair from frizzing in humidity and have longer lasting styles. Our esthetics students might recommend a Hydrating Moisturizer with SPF to recover and protect from sun damage. Please help our students learn by giving them feedback on how those products worked, or can be better.
Products or retail seems like it doesn’t need it exist in the Salon or Spa. However, we believe in the products we carry, and the manufacturers that we partner with, and will always recommend the best products available to you.
