When I was in Cosmetology School, I was told to learn the foundation or basics, then I can be creative. After leaving school, I continued to hear that from my mentors and educators, as things keep evolving quickly in this industry. In esthetics and skincare, we continue to learn about our skin, along with new ingredients & technology to improve the appearance. The common misconception is that our students are not taught everything they need to know to work in a salon or spa. However, our purpose and mission is to prep our students with the foundation, so they can adapt to any environment, education, guests, and trends.
I love to skateboard, and have for most of my life. What intrigues me about it is that its all about style and combination of foundational tricks. Every trick invented and progression so far has always been inspired by what came before. Without the progressive mindset, the boundaries and limits would have been met long ago. Just like skateboarding, the beauty industry is always inspired by what was created previously, and built on it. There is no way to teach our students everything they need to know immediately to take guests or clients. Teaching the foundation is going to make the learning process so much quicker and effective out in the world.
In skateboarding, the same trick can be done by 2 different skaters, and yet it will look completely different. It is due to style and learning what works for each skater. There is no such thing as the right way to cut hair, or performing a facial service. Many people can achieve the same result with different approaches, and finding that is the key in the Beauty Industry. Not only do we teach our students the foundations, we also teach to be open minded, so they can absorb the information when they see it. Who knew beauty training could be just like skateboarding?!
To learn a trade like esthetics or cosmetology, it is imperative that we continue to practice. There is no such thing as “I don’t need practice anymore”. Trends will continue to change, and we need to practice those new techniques and ideas before we start charging our guests. If you are in search for a creative new career, please inquire with our school for a tour to see if we are a good match. Just like skateboarding, you just have to experience it once, and you will be hooked. I promise.
With much Love,
Ty Isobe
