Balayage and foil highlights are two popular hair coloring techniques, each with its own characteristics. Here at The Salon Professional Academy Ft Myers, we are constantly getting requests for Balayage or Foil Highlights from our guests. With Summer arriving, these looks are sure to be filling your stories and feeds on social media. Whether as a stylist performing the highlights, or a guest receiving the service, communication is key to achieving the right look. Lets take a dive into these 2 popular techniques to answer the question “Balayage or Foil Highlights?”.
Balayage is a freehand technique where the color is painted onto the hair, creating a more natural, sun-kissed look. This technique tends to create a softer, blended effect with a seamless transition, while foil highlights offer a more controlled and dramatic contrast.
Foil highlights, on the other hand, involve separating sections of hair and applying color or bleach with foils, resulting in more precise, defined highlights. The benefit here is that you are able to achieve lighter results due to finer sections and slight incubation from the foils.
Foilayage is a technique that merges the 2 types of highlights together. This technique allows you to achieve the lightest possible color, with the softness of a balayage. There are many ways people have created with this technique. Definitely search #Foilayage in social media for some inspiration.
The choice between the 3 highlighting options will depend on personal preference and desired outcome. Make sure to have a thorough consultation with your stylist with lots of photos and references to assure you are on the same page with the same vision.
The Salon Professional Academy Fort Myers is proud to have our students learning these varieties of highlight techniques. Our hope is that our students enter the workforce with foundations so that they are able to learn and absorb more techniques as they progress in their career.
Have a Happy Summer!!
With much Love,
Ty Isobe
