If you are considering attending Cosmetology School, you might be asking yourself, “What can I do with a Cosmetology License?”. Most people assume that Owning a Salon or Spa is the only goal for Licensed Cosmetologists and Estheticians. It’s absolutely one of the many options and could be very lucrative if done correctly. However, it may not be for everyone, especially for those that are more creative artists than business savvy owners. Lets dive deeper into some other opportunities in the Beauty Industry.
Did you know there are hairdressers and makeup artists out there with Academy Awards? I once met a Academy Award winning Hairdresser and her son, who also followed in her footsteps. Sometimes the director needs the actor to look exactly the same for all the scenes. As a matter of fact, they don’t always shoot the scenes in chronological sequence, so it would be distracting if the hair got longer, then shorter, then longer again in a short period of time. So, accuracy and precision is crucial for these artists that work on set for movies and tv. Imagine winning an Academy Award as a hairdresser or makeup artist!
I have a guest that is a Licensed Cosmetologist who works at Disney World as the Characters Hair and Makeup Artist. For those looking for a fun and creative environment to be immersed in while creating hairstyles and makeup for the characters, this could be for you. She absolutely loves her job and can’t wait to get to work everyday. If being behind the chair everyday working on clients isn’t the thing for you, maybe fantasy characters might interest you.
Session Stylists are typically recognized by their work in magazines, videos, and fashion runways. These artists are contracted for an extremely high fee, especially as a highly sought after artist. The respect they have from Fashion Designers, Photographers, and Editors are crucial in their relationship and brand building. It might look like a simple messy bun to most, but the detail and the inspiration/collaboration behind the look is much deeper than most assume.
Haircare, Skincare, and Makeup Manufacturers are always looking for experienced educators to teach the product usage to the professionals. Some educators are local or regional, all the way to renowned national and international educators. Without the education on what, how, why, and when to use the products, it won’t lead to sales of products. Educators teach the professionals, then the professionals teach our consumers, thus insuring that everyone knows how to effectively use that product. As an educator, there will be lots of travel involved, meeting new people constantly, and with public speaking or platform work. You could be representing a brand that you connect with and love, inspiring others.
No matter which career path you choose, at The Salon Professional Academy Ft Myers, we encourage our students to find something that they feel passionate about. As cliche as it sounds, money shouldn’t be the first motivator over love. If you love what you do, it sure makes showing up to work a lot easier and fun. Furthermore, our hope is that each and every one of our students find their true love, and follow their dreams, because theres more to this industry than owning a salon or spa.
With much love,
Ty Isobe
