Does anyone like ALL music?

Have you ever met someone that said they “like ANY kind of music”, or “listen to everything”? Usually it follows with, “other than Country, Heavy Metal, Gangster Rap, or etc”. The point is, I have never met anyone that actually likes all music. Theres always something obscure or different that doesn’t really fit that person. Musicians, Producers, and Artists are totally ok with that because art form like music SHOULD be subjective and catered to a certain style or even demographics. Why am I talking about music in a Beauty School Blog you ask? It’s because the art of hair and skin is very similar to music in many ways. Let me discuss some of those similarities.

Genre

Just like music having different genres and sub-genres, the Beauty Industry has many different genres such as: hair, nails, skin, massage therapy, make-up, Tattoo, etc. Sub-genres would be the specialty services or niche market such as: bridal, special effects, hair and make up for movies & tv, session stylist for publications, testing and development for manufacturers, platform artists & influencers, and the list goes on and on. As a service provider in Cosmetology or Esthetics, we don’t have to stick to 1 genre nor do we have to perform all genres. We just need to discover which ones you love the most, and allow room for evolution in the future.

Esthetics Services

Find your genre

Each person has their own specific taste and style, so we understand and encourage this. When we go through our haircut, haircolor, skincare training, we recognize different talent and gifts in each of our students. We encourage them to a genre that they might gravitate to, then they are off on their journey to dive deeper in that genre or sub-genre. Like I said before, we need to leave room for evolution. As we go through our journeys, so does our taste and likes. It’s never too late to explore new genres in your career.

Bands/Groups

The Salon or Spa that our students end up in is just like a Band or Music Group. Each stylist or band member is responsible for their part. When the band members don’t get along or have major disagreements, it can be catastrophic for that band. Working with the right people can make life so much more enjoyable in the Salon or Spa. Cosmetology School and Esthetics School is probably just like Music School. Learning the basics or foundation is important to learning the instrument, just like learning how to perform our services on the salon floor or spa. However, a huge part of our school here in Fort Myers is the culture we have, and we want our students to find the band that fits their culture and makes them feel at home.

Band Members

You may notice that bands are typically formed with people that have different skillsets, like instruments. When you visit a salon for a haircut, even if you were to request the same look, you would get 10 different results from 10 different stylists. Thats due to their individual style and strengths. Not everyone takes the same approach to achieve the same result. Best case scenario is a salon that recognizes the different talents within their organization, so they can delegate the right guest to the right service provider. And just like most bands, the one thats most unique tends to stand out in the spotlight, but that member knows that without the rest of the band, it wouldn’t be possible.

Record Labels

In the Beauty Industry, manufacturers such as https://www.redken.com/ or https://www.dermalogica.com/ could be considered Record Labels.

Choose the Right Manufacturer to align with

The Salon or Spa, “the Band”, will use certain products from certain manufacturers because it either performs well, or fits the culture. The only difference here with the music industry is that we might carry more than one line in a salon or spa, but that is usually to be able to cater to more than one demographic or price points. Either way, just like signing with the right Record Label is crucial for the Band, so is carrying the right products and color that supports your salon and spa culture and image.

This was fun and interesting for me illustrating the similarities between the Beauty Industry and Music Industry. At The Salon Professional Academy Ft Myers, we welcome every student with interests in different genres, and will always guide them to learn the foundations and find that special band.
